Dave Stubbs intervista Italiano

Matt Bromley - multipla sudafricano campione shortboard
Jordan Alexander - specialista Air

Italia Surf Expo 2015 STAND UP WORLD CHALLENGE SERIES 2015 LONG DISTANCE RESULT

Dave Stubbs Interview

David Stubbs is a leading shaper and manufacturer of world class surfboards, longboards, SUP’s, and kiteboards. As an avid contest surfer and craftsman his focus has always been developing cutting edge products. Dave has recently teamed up with Starboard to help develop, innovate and create some of the best surfboards on the market. We sat down and had a quick chat with Dave.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SHAPING SURFBOARDS FOR?
I started shaping when I was in school, as I couldn’t afford to buy my own surfboards. Thirty years later and I haven’t stopped shaping. (1980)

WHAT SHAPERS INFLUENCED YOU EARLY IN YOUR CAREER?
Clive Barber helped me a lot, and then of course there is Simon Anderson and Merrick.

HOW DO YOU FEEL SURFERS SHAPE REFERENCES HAVE CHANGED OVER THE  YEARS?
I think that boards have done a full circle from the 80s; being wider and flatter, to becoming more skinny and narrow, and then returning to the wider dumpster-style boards with fuller outlines and noses that are so popular today.

WHAT PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU FEEL ARE NECESSARY TO BE A SUCCESSFUL SHAPER?
A good listener! A good shaper needs to be able to make great boards based on each individuals personal needs.

YOU ARE KNOWN FOR YOUR CRAFTSMANSHIP.  WHAT OTHER PROJECTS HAVE YOU DONE IN THE PAST?
I handcraft acoustic and electric guitars as a hobby, and have recently started building wood and composite bicycles.

YOU ARE AN ACCOMPLISHED SURFER YOURSELF. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS?
I spent multiple years competing for the Western Province team, both in shortboard and longboard divisions. I am also 3 time South African Longboard Champion.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR PROMINENT SOUTH AFRICAN RIDERS?
Matt Moir – 2x ISA World longboard champion
Simone Robb – ISA World longboard champion
Justin Bing – South African longboard champion
Matt Bromley – Multiple South African shortboard champion
Jordan Alexander – Air specialist

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF SURFBOARD DESIGN?
I think the future of surfboards will change partly in the shape of the boards, but mostly in the construction, the boards becoming lighter and stronger, undoubtedly improved.

YOUR IDEAL SURF BREAK?
Any wave that allows you to do multiple turns and I am happy!

Active Carbon
Our Active Carbon surfboards are a combination of classic design mixed with innovation. The flexibility of the surfboard is adjusted by using different fiber orientations, carbon strengths, and outer/inner densities. These elements fine-tune the board’s ability to flex and return, allowing its user to surf fast, explosively and extremely responsively whether at an intermediate or advanced level.

Starboard Surf 2016

full carbon in ACTIVE CARBON.

ACTIVE CARBON

Starboard Surf AMP

 AMP

Designed to be ridden from waist high to slightly overhead waves the AMP is a full attack high performance summer shape for intermediate to advanced riders. A kicked snub-nose coming into a slightly wider outline with a touch extra volume paddles well and generates heaps of drive and acceleration. The AMP features a thruster set-up with a clean single concave running the length of the board making it ideal for punchy reef and beach breaks.

ELECTRIFY YOUR PERFORMANCE

Designed to be ridden from waist high to slightly overhead waves the AMP is a full attack high performance summer shape for intermediate to advanced riders. A kicked snub-nose coming into a slightly wider outline with a touch extra volume paddles well and generates heaps of drive and acceleration. The AMP features a thruster set-up with a clean single concave running the length of the board making it ideal for punchy reef and beach breaks.
The super lightweight yet bomb proof ACTIVE carbon construction infuses significant spring and projection when releasing from a turn. The AMP begs to be sent airborne and is built to withstand the punishment.

Perfection through customized imperfection

These incredibly light and especially precise boards are created in a partly translucent built method. We utilize a semi custom process where the first cocoon of fused cell core , glass and high density Corecell is precision formed in high pressure molds. Shape imperfections from core memory is sanded down before vacuum bagging the outer carbon skin, which is left visible with it’s cosmetic imperfections . The rails get their incredible definition with minimal layers of a white extra strong precision filler. Every board will look a little different cosmetically, but thus even more identical in shape.

Tech & Features

ACTIVE-INSIDE

Active Inside
The patent pending internal ACTIVE system creates performance through flex.
The flexibility of the board is adjusted by using different fiber orientations, carbon strengths and outer/inner foam core densities. These elements fine tune the board’s ability to flex and return.
The ACTIVE system features a laminated STARFLEX carbon corecell stringer. The stringer is suspended through the center of the board between two high memory polypropylene layers. This acts like a dynamic spring allowing the shell laminate to flex freely but preventing hyperflexion under extreme load.
